Wag awarded Mayor’s Opportunity Fund Grant

We are very grateful to have been awarded a grant of £9,620 by the Mayor’s Opportunity Fund.

This will enable us to recruit and support 20 befriending Wag Teams matched to regularly visit 20 older dog lovers (65+) feeling isolated or alone in their own homes in rural and deprived areas of Northumberland and Tyne & Wear.

The older people we visit – 405 last year – typically have health issues that affect their ability to go out independently or at all. Over half have, or are waiting for, a Dementia diagnosis. All have been dog owners, but it’s no longer possible for them to have a dog in their life. On average, they each receive visits over 35 weeks of the year. A human friend for a chat over a cuppa and a furry friend for a much missed cuddle. Something to look forward to and friends for life.

We never charge so that no one misses out. Instead, we fundraise to be able to do this work in accordance with safe visiting protocols.
