Older dog lovers in our region who need Wag friends!

Newcastle

Mr S, 79, lives with his partner in Newcastle. They’ve always had dogs, but now they can’t have a dog of their own, and they really miss having them in their lives. Due to Mr S’s health issues, they are now unable to get out much any more and have started feeling more and more isolated.  They’d really love to have the company of a small dog again. Do you have the perfect little cuddle monster and an hour or two most weeks to make a difference in your community?

Mr T, 77, lives with his wife in Newcastle; they’ve always had dogs in their lives until now. After they lost their beloved Collie, they looked after a family dog until that was no longer possible for health reasons, and they really miss them. Their son has now moved abroad, and they are both feeling quite lonely and isolated. Could you and your dog spare an hour or two most weeks to bring the joy of a dog back to their home?

Mrs S, 78, lives with her husband in Newcastle and, having always had dogs (mainly smaller ones), now that Mrs S’ health means they can no longer have one of their own, they really miss them. Sadly they aren’t able to get out much any more, so regular visits from Wag friend with two and with four legs will make all the difference. Could you and your little cuddle monster help?

South Shields

Mrs C, 82, is a widow who lives in sheltered accommodation in South Shields. After having to rehome her beloved Westie, she really misses the company of a furry friend. Most of her family don’t live locally, so she would love to have regular visitors for a chat over a cuppa and some special cuddles from a four-legged friend again. Do you have the perfect cuddle monster who could give Mrs C something special to look forward to?

 

Northumberland

Near Warkworth

Mrs B is 86 and has lived alone in her own home since she lost her husband over 10 years ago. She adores dogs and, really sadly, she lost her Jack Russell less than a year ago at the grand old age of 18 – very sad! After losing him, she feels really isolated and lonely, and misses his company very much. Her son lives close by, but having a lovely new friend for a chat over a cuppa, and their lovely little dog for a cuddle, will be just what the Doctor ordered! Could it be you?

Morpeth

Mr S is 83 and lives with his wife in Morpeth. They’ve always had big dogs, most recently a Labrador and an Alsatian, but Mr S can no longer drive and, sadly, can’t get out much anymore either, so they can no longer have a dog of their own. Mr S would love to spend time with a dog again and have a friend for a regular chat over a cuppa. In time, he’d love to be able to go for a short walk too. Do you have a four-legged friend you’d love to share?

 

Near Durham/County Durham

Ms S, 74, lives alone in her own home near Durham. She loves dogs; after losing her last dog, a Miniature Poodle, she looked after dogs for her friends. Now she can no longer look after a dog; she really misses them. She’d love a small dog to sit on her knee again and a Wag friend for a regular chat over a cuppa.

Chester le Street

Mr O, 88, is a widower and lives alone in Chester le Street. Although Mr O has a very supportive family, he says he spends more time alone than he’d like. He absolutely loves dogs and has a photo of his last dog, a beloved Collie, next to his chair, but he can no longer have a dog of his own, and said that having a dog to visit ‘would be fantastic’.  Mr O loves dogs, of course, and he also has an interest in war films and motorbikes, so he would really love a regular visit to spend time with a four-legged friend again and a human friend for a chat over a cuppa too. Do you have a spare hour or two to make the world of difference to Mr O?

 

North Yorkshire

Northallerton 

Mr M, 64, lives alone in sheltered accommodation in Northallerton. Mr M used to live abroad; he moved back to the UK after he tragically lost his partner of over 30 years. His beloved dog, a Labrador / Mastiff, came with him, but he sadly lost him quite recently, and he’s finding his loss ‘unbearable’. Mr M uses a wheelchair, and he says he knows he wouldn’t be able to have another dog of his own now, but he desperately misses his beloved dog, and spending time with a dog again would really mean the world to him. Do you have a big cuddle monster and some time to share with a fellow dog lover who really, really needs a friend?

Mrs L, 76, lives alone in her own home in Northallerton after her husband moved into a residential care home around a year ago. They had dogs together throughout their lives, most recently a Labrador and a Spaniel, but it’s no longer possible; in fact, Mrs L only leaves the house for medical appointments now. Mrs L says she feels a great loss no longer having a dog in her life. An hour or two most weeks to share your lovely pooch really would mean the world to Mrs L.

Older people living in residential care and nursing homes are much less isolated than the people we visit in their own homes, but their need for contact with a dog again is just as important. The pleasure and comfort they get from spending time with a beautiful dog is written all over their faces. Last year, Wag volunteers visited residents and patients in 230 care homes, hospitals and hospices across the North East, but 194 are still waiting. Can you help?
